SUMMARY:BAE Systems\, Stop Arming Israel - North West Regional Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Greater Manchester & District CND is supporting the upcoming ‘BAE Systems – Stop Arming Israel’ North West regional demonstration. The BAE Systems factory in Blackburn manufactures essential components for the F-16 and F-35 fighter jets currently complicit in Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza. The F-35s in particular are stationed at RAF Lakenheath\, the same location the US plans to site deadly B61-12 nuclear bombs in Britain. It is vital that the peace movement opposes the military-industrial complex at all parts of supply and deliverance. In this spirit\, we encourage you to spread the word via your local peace\, community and campaigning groups. There will be transport organised from Manchester. If you would like to join this transport\, get in touch with the office on gmdcnd@gn.apc.org

SUMMARY:National March to Labour's Conference: End the Genocide in Gaza – Stop Arming Israel
DESCRIPTION:Sat 21 Sept – 12pm \nLiverpool – St. George’s Plateau (Outside Lime Street Station) \n11 months in and Israel’s genocide in Gaza continues to accelerate. Schools and hospitals are still being continually struck by Israeli attacks and a Lancet study has estimated that the true overall death toll may be as high as 180\,000. Despite a change of government\, the British state is still supporting these war crimes taking place on a daily basis. \nLabour’s decision to reinstate funding for UNWRA and the abandonment of a proposal to block the ICC’s warrants against Netanyahu are victories for our movement. Now\, we call on them to suspend all arms sales to the apartheid Israeli state. \nJoin the protest in Liverpool at Labour Party Conference to call on our government to push for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and immediately end its support for apartheid Israel’s genocide. If you plan on attending\, get in touch with GMD CND!

SUMMARY:Film Screening of 'Threads' and Q&A with Guest Speaker
DESCRIPTION:Forty years ago in 1984\, Mick Jackson’s devastatingly honest account of the effect of nuclear war rocked cinema and television screens. Centering on the city of Sheffield and the travails of two families trying to navigate the impact of a nuclear attack\, Threads details the social\, environmental\, medical and political consequences of nuclear war. Winner of four BAFTA awards and honoured as a masterpiece by film critics at the time and posthumously\, Threads is more relevant than ever. \nIn January 1984\, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists moved the Doomsday Clock – a symbol that represents the likelihood of a human-made global catastrophe – to three minutes to midnight. Today\, in 2024\, the clock sits at 90 seconds to midnight. Whilst large majorities of the world\, in particular the states of the Global South\, have been determinedly pushing the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons\, the planet’s most powerful states have been fanning the flames of nuclear conflagration. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine saw Putin threaten the use of nuclear weapons\, and Israel’s genocidal war in Palestine was accompanied by the threat of dropping a nuclear bomb on Gaza. \nThreads isn’t simply a reminder of a bygone world\, it is a vision of the world we desperately need to avoid. We live in alarming and perilous times and it is increasingly vital that those of us who value peace and social justice come together to work out how we can change it. Join us for a film screening\, good vibes and a conversation on how we change the world. \nThere will be refreshments.

SUMMARY:Stop US nukes – national demonstration at Lakenheath - 2nd November 2024
DESCRIPTION:Save the date! \nCND is organising the next national demonstration at RAF Lakenheath in protest against US nuclear weapons returning to the base. \nSince April 2022\, there has been growing evidence that the US intends to use RAF Lakenheath as a major part of NATO’s nuclear weapons infrastructure in Europe. US budget documents show that the base’s weapons storage silos are being upgraded to store the new B61-12 guided nuclear bomb\, and new dormitory buildings are being built to house additional military personnel needed for any potential nuclear weapons mission. Washington also intends to double the amount of nuclear-capable F-35 aircraft it has stationed at Lakenheath to 54\, as part of efforts to increase its military presence in Europe. \nCND supporters have repeatedly protested at RAF Lakenheath and across the country since we first heard the news\, with recent actions including a peace camp and a day of action. We are also legally challenging development works at the base. \nUS nuclear weapons coming to Britain make us all a target in any nuclear war. This is a national issue – we want everyone to understand what a nuclear attack would mean for them. \nIf you would like to join GMD CND in travelling down to the demonstration\, let us know by sending us an email on gmdcnd@gn.apc.org

SUMMARY:Stop Trident\, Start at Barrow - 22nd March 2025
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday 22nd March\, we will be travelling to Barrow to join the national march on the BAE Systems shipyards called by national CND. \nTrident is an immoral weapon of mass destruction. Each of the 4 Dreadnought class submarines being built in Barrow would have the capacity to carry multiple nuclear warheads\, each with 30 times the destructive power of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in August 1945. \nBarrow and its hinterland need diverse economic development providing secure employment for future generations\, not dependence on a single arms manufacturer like BAE Systems. The area needs investment in sustainable industries making better use of its skilled workers and heritage. \nTrident will cost hundreds of billions. In 2016\, it’s estimated lifetime cost was already £205\,000\,000\,0000. These are billions that could be spent on developing industries\, jobs and services needed to sustain towns like Barrow in the long-term and to free them from dependence on weapons production. \nBarrow’s role in the Trident programme makes it an obvious military target. Indeed\, we know from the North West Evening Mail (15th August 2024) that the Russian military has already rehearsed a scenario in which Barrow’s shipyard would be the main target in a nuclear attack on the UK. \nAccidents involving the meltdown of working nuclear-powered engines in the dock would result in the release of highly radioactive iodine\, leaving anyone exposed – especially children and unborn babies – at high risk of developing thyroid cancers. (Stable iodine tablets taken soon enough afterwards may counter this risk\, but\, the World Health Organisation tells us that they would “not protect against any other radioactive substances that may be released in the environment.”) \nIt is imperative that we make this demonstration as big as possible\, marking a new moment in bringing forth a campaign for justice\, peace and diversification. \nPlease arrive to Chorlton Street coach station in Central Manchester at 9.15am sharp. SUMMARY:Blockade Lakenheath! Pledge to join us in protesting against US nukes coming to Britain
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday 26th April\, we will be travelling to RAF Lakenheath to join the Lakenheath Alliance for Peace’s national blockade of the military base. We want you to join us too! \nThe British government continues to ignore public concerns over the return of United States nuclear weapons to Britain\, despite growing evidence that they are on their way. CND opposes any return of these weapons to RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk. The deployment of these bombs in Britain makes us a target in any potential nuclear conflict involving the US and must be stopped. \nEvidence is mounting that the US is preparing to site some of its nuclear weapons in the UK\, specifically at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk. This originated when the US Department of Defense added the UK to a list of NATO nuclear weapons storage locations in Europe being upgraded under a multimillion-dollar infrastructure programme. \nRAF Lakenheath previously hosted US nuclear weapons for more than five decades\, first arriving in September 1954. Following years of protesting\, the nuclear weapons were eventually removed in 2008\, but not before nuclear accidents endangered the local community. \nCrucially\, Lakenheath received the first of its F-35A nuclear-capable fighters in 2021\, with a total of 54 F-35As expected to be based there eventually. A new fuel cell maintenance facility\, which will enable the US to operate the F-35 aircraft from the Suffolk airbase\, opened in 2023. The F-35A aircraft is compatible with the B61 nuclear bomb and has been involved in Israel’s genocidal bombing campaign over Gaza. \nIt is absolutely vital that we mobilise in big numbers to oppose an escalated US nuclear presence whilst also insisting that we do not want to house weapons sent to murder innocent Palestinians thousands of miles away. \nPlease arrive to Chorlton Street coach station in Central Manchester at 7am sharp. The bus will be setting off swiftly. Bring plenty of water\, snacks and some lunch. \nThere may be an opportunity for a cheaper or free ticket depending on the amount of donations we receive so do contact us if you cannot afford these prices. You can pledge to join us in travelling to Lakenheath here.

SUMMARY:Conscientious Objectors Day: It’s Your Right to Refuse to Fight
DESCRIPTION:Every year on May 15th we remember conscientious objectors\, both past and present. Around the world many people are imprisoned or forced to flee their home countries for refusing to join the armed forces. On May 15th we stand in solidarity with them\, as well as celebrating the memory of those throughout history who have resisted conscription. \nIn the past five years\, we have seen war rage in Europe and genocide take place in Palestine. Both acts of mass violence\, have seen the importance of conscientious objection raised once again\, as citizens refuse the turn to war. These brave people must be defended. \nIn Manchester\, on 15th May in Peace Gardens\, Lincoln Square\, M2 5AD\, we will be commemorating those who refuse to enlist in the armed forces by joining the international peace mobilisations. There will be readings\, poems and a guided meditation commemorating Conscientious Objectors from both World Wars and current conflicts. \nAs in previous years we will have readings and reflections. \nThe Peace Pledge Union have given us the names of around 80 contemporary COs\, and we have a statement from “Sasha” who has refused to fight for Russia. We also have material from the Refusers Network in Israel. \nWe are looking for about ten or twelve readers. \n\nSasha’s story needs 3 men\, each to read for two minutes.\nThe CO names need 4 people each to read 20 names.Qaisra Shahraz\, Erinma Bell and Ali Ronan are confirmed as readers and Siobhan Harpur will lead a meditation followed by an invited silence.\nWould you like to take part\, and bring a reading of your choice?\n\nIf so\, please reply as soon as possible to pamflynn@cooptel.net  cc alironan61@gmail.com \nPlease let us know if you will read names\, read part of Sasha’s story\, or bring your own reading. \nPlease also share this information widely and visit CO-Day.org to find out more about what is happening elsewhere.

SUMMARY:Independence from America demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Surveillance information gathered and processed at the Menwith Hill spy base in Yorkshire is used in many ways\, most of which are kept secret. Some of the gathered data is used to provide targeting information for military drones. People are being killed either because they are the target or more often because they were simply in the vicinity for a drone strike. As Yorkshire CND’s Dave Webb has highlighted\, nowhere has this been clearer than with the role of operatives at the spy base supplying the U.S. intelligence services with information\, some of which will be used to help the Israeli Defence Forces target their attacks in Gaza. So\, the UK is helping Israel’s slaughter of Palestinians not only by supplying arms\, but also by supplying intelligence information to help target the attacks which have constituted the ongoing genocide in Gaza. \nMembers and supporters of the Menwith Hill Accountability Campaign (MHAC) have spent decades relentlessly protesting the unaccountable and highly secret activities that go on inside the U.S. spy base nominally called ‘RAF’ Menwith Hill but run by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA). Join them again this year for the annual Independence from America demonstration. \nPlease note this annual event will be on Friday 4th July 2025 this year\, mostly in the Kettlesing Millenium Village Hall. There will be contributions from Australia and New Zealand where there are related problems of large American Military Surveillance operations which are unaccountable to the national government or local population. As the programme for the afternoon develops it will be posted on https://themhac.uk and circulated via our website and newsletters. \nIf you are interested in joining us from Manchester this year\, then please get in touch on gmdcnd@gn.apc.org and let us know if you’d be interested in travelling via coach

SUMMARY:Why US Nukes on UK soil are bad for Britain public meeting
DESCRIPTION:Evidence is clear that US nuclear weapons have arrived in Britain – at the Lakenheath NATO base in Suffolk. These deadly weapons make us all a target. And they increase the risk of Britain being dragged into Trump’s reckless wars. \nThe majority of the population totally understand how these nuclear weapons don’t make us safer. That’s why a majority oppose their deployment here in Britain. \nJoin us for our upcoming public meeting\, featuring Kate Hudson (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament)\, Angie Zelter (Lakenheath Alliance for Peace) & Rae Street (Campaigner for peace & justice for over 50 years). As part of Lakenheath Alliance for Peace’s tour to highlight how we can work together to end the threat of nuclear weapons\, increased militarisation of our state\, and endless wars\, please join us for this public meeting on 13th November\, 6.30pm @ Cross Street Chapel\, Cross Street\, M2 1NL. \nThe Lakenheath Alliance for Peace is a coalition of groups that is dedicated to preventing the return of US Nuclear weapons to USAF Lakenheath. It is committed to nonviolent direct action for a peaceful and non-threatening world. The campaign demands that military resources be directed towards global peace and justice and the prevention of human disaster caused by climate change and biodiversity loss.

SUMMARY:Britain’s war economy - why we need an alternative
DESCRIPTION:Britain’s public services – education\, healthcare\, local government\, mail\, and transport – are all suffering from chronic neglect and underinvestment. \nThe North West ranks as the second most deprived area in the country. In Manchester\, a high of 41% of neighbourhoods are classed as deprived whilst Barrow\, host to BAE Systems’ nuclear submarine programme\, has a considerable concentration of unemployment and high rates of child poverty. \nMassive public investment is needed to rebuild the social and economic fabric of working-class communities. Yet amidst intensifying global conflict\, escalating climate crisis and soaring inequality – with the decision to dramatically increase defence spending in its 2024 Strategic Defence Review\, the Labour government committed to increasing defence spending to 2.5% of GDP.  At the same time\, it decided to cut spending on education. \nAnd now\, under political pressure from Trump\, as Starmer moves the country towards actual ‘war-fighting readiness’\, the military spend is expected to ratchet up to 5 per cent of GDP. \nThe government presents the increase in arms manufacturing as the way out for the country’s economic and social problems\, announcing new jobs in the sector as good for local communities as a whole. \nBut\, the ever-higher expenditure on arms means less money for our education\, health\, councils\, and the green transition: the plans will not only exacerbate our problems but tie us ever more closely to the US\, carrying us rapidly along the path to war between the major powers. \nTo the country and the North West region’s shame\, British participation in the F-35 programme has implicated us in Israel’s grave violations of international law in Gaza. \nAnd now\, Starmer’s approach towards militarisation is reaching out into wider society and schools. \nA resolution on Wages not Weapons was passed last year by the TUC Congress\, calling for the reversal of policy dating from 2022\, of support for immediate increases in defence spending.  Noting that ‘actively campaigning for ever-higher spending on arms risks signalling approval of a wider drive to war\, it called on the trade union movement to ‘stand\, in our best traditions\, for peace and against militarisation’. \nThe North West\, home to leading arms companies including BAE systems\, MBDA\, Thales and WFEL\, is seen as a ‘national strategic asset’.  Potential sites for new munitions factories have been identified in the region\, whilst the UK’s National Cyber Force (NCF) was recently opened by BAE Systems in Lancashire. \nBased on CND’s recent Alternative Defence Review\, this event aims to raise awareness of militarisation and its wider impact on the North West and to come up with concrete strategies for taking the TUC motion into workplaces and communities\, focusing on developing practical ideas on: \nWhat are the costs and consequences of increasing military spending? How do we stop the race to war? \nHow can we tackle the government’s arguments that investment in the military sector is good for the country? How should trade unions and communities respond? In which areas can we have the most effect? \nThere will be a panel session featuring leading figures in the peace movement\, Kate Hudson (Vice President of CND) and Alex Gordon (National Officer of Stop the War Coalition and formerly President of the National Union of Rail\, Maritime and Transport Workers)\, plus contributions from peace campaigners in Germany and Belgium\nBut mostly\, this conference is about what you can do.
