DESCRIPTION:Forty years ago in 1984\, Mick Jackson’s devastatingly honest account of the effect of nuclear war rocked cinema and television screens. Centering on the city of Sheffield and the travails of two families trying to navigate the impact of a nuclear attack\, Threads details the social\, environmental\, medical and political consequences of nuclear war. Winner of four BAFTA awards and honoured as a masterpiece by film critics at the time and posthumously\, Threads is more relevant than ever. \nIn January 1984\, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists moved the Doomsday Clock – a symbol that represents the likelihood of a human-made global catastrophe – to three minutes to midnight. Today\, in 2024\, the clock sits at 90 seconds to midnight. Whilst large majorities of the world\, in particular the states of the Global South\, have been determinedly pushing the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons\, the planet’s most powerful states have been fanning the flames of nuclear conflagration. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine saw Putin threaten the use of nuclear weapons\, and Israel’s genocidal war in Palestine was accompanied by the threat of dropping a nuclear bomb on Gaza. \nThreads isn’t simply a reminder of a bygone world\, it is a vision of the world we desperately need to avoid. We live in alarming and perilous times and it is increasingly vital that those of us who value peace and social justice come together to work out how we can change it. Schools and hospitals are still being continually struck by Israeli attacks and a Lancet study has estimated that the true overall death toll may be as high as 180\,000. Despite a change of government\, the British state is still supporting these war crimes taking place on a daily basis. \nLabour’s decision to reinstate funding for UNWRA and the abandonment of a proposal to block the ICC’s warrants against Netanyahu are victories for our movement. Now\, we call on them to suspend all arms sales to the apartheid Israeli state. \nJoin the protest in Liverpool at Labour Party Conference to call on our government to push for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and immediately end its support for apartheid Israel’s genocide. The BAE Systems factory in Blackburn manufactures essential components for the F-16 and F-35 fighter jets currently complicit in Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza. The F-35s in particular are stationed at RAF Lakenheath\, the same location the US plans to site deadly B61-12 nuclear bombs in Britain. It is vital that the peace movement opposes the military-industrial complex at all parts of supply and deliverance. SUMMARY:Menwith Hill: Independence from America 2024
DESCRIPTION:On 4th July\, the Menwith Hill Accountability Campaign (MHAC) is organising a protest outside the Menwith Hill military spy base as a part of their Independence Day commemorations. \nMHAC is exactly what its title says it is\, a campaign to make the activities carried out at the Menwith Hill base accountable to the UK Government and to the local people. Surveillance information gathered and processed at Menwith Hill is used in many ways\, most of which are kept in secret. Some of the gathered data is used to provide targeting information for military drones. People are being killed either because they are the target or more often because they were simply in the vicinity for a drone strike. Supporters of MHAC believe these extra judicial executions are wrong. MHAC holds weekly peaceful demonstrations\, undertakes research to provide the evidence on which to campaign\, publishes a newsletter and maintains a website. \nIn solidarity with our peace movement allies at MHAC and in response to the news\, highlighted by Yorkshire CND’s Dave Webb\, that Menwith Hill is one of the sites where information is passed onto US intelligence services and then used by the Israeli Defence Forces to target the Gazan population\, campaigners from GMD CND will be driving down in cars on 4th July. If you are interested in attending\, please get in touch with GMD CND office on gmdcnd@gn.apc.org and we will see if we can twin you with other drivers. SUMMARY:Stop US Nukes Coming To Britain - Lakenheath Day of Action
DESCRIPTION:US nuclear weapons are coming to Britain. They’re putting us all on the nuclear front line. \nOpinion polls show that the majority of the public does not want the weapons coming here: let’s come together to show the government that these bombs are not welcome. \nUS nuclear weapons coming to Britain would mean we become a further part of the US war machine\, making us all a target in any nuclear war. The UK government can stop this from happening. If we show enough public resistance\, we can press them to reject these plans and prevent these terrible weapons from making us a target. \nCND has called a Day of Action for Saturday 11 May and we will be holding an information stall in response\, trying to spread the word amongst the Greater Manchester public. \nOn the day\, we’ll be collecting signatures of support for our campaign\, from the public\, to hand in to 10 Downing Street at a later date – order your hand-in cards here to make sure your area is represented. \nJoin us from 11.30am-1.30pm in St. Peter’s Square\, M1 5AN.
